What is the best time to watch Surfers in San Diego?

Time of the Day

The morning and evening are frequently the finest times to go surfing. You will find the highest number of quality surfers on the ocean either early in the evening or just before sunset.

Due to pressure differentials between the land and ocean, surfing is best when an offshore wind is blowing, typically at the beginning & end of the day. In the middle of the day, on onshore wind sometimes known as a “sea breeze” develops as hot air from the land rises while cooler air from the sea flows beneath it. This blows the wind away from the ocean, toward the land, which makes for less ideal surfing conditions.

What are the best places to watch Surfers in San Diego?

Oceanside Pier

Why this surf spot?

This place has waves for days! With miles and miles of sweet little breaks, you’ll see all kinds of surfers from the newbies just starting out to the gnarly veterans who shred those waves like nobody’s business. Plus the Oceanside Pier is pretty cool! It’s huge! At almost 2,000 feet long, it’s one of the longest piers on the whole dang West Coast.

For spectators

The pier is one of the few places where you can catch a bird’s eye view of the surfers as they ride the waves and show off their moves. It’s always fascinating to watch them scope out the perfect wave from afar and then ride it all the way to shore. And, if you’re lucky, you might even see a brave surfer weave through the wooden pillars of the pier for an even more radical ride!

The surfing community in Oceanside is strong and it’s a blast to soak up their energy and excitement. Don’t forget to grab a bite at one of the cool surfer-run restaurants nearby, like the Beach Break Cafe or The Privateer. Hang loose, dudes and dudettes!

La Jolla Shores

Why this surf spot?

This spot is so good, even the seals come to hang out! And who can blame them? With miles of sandy beach, crystal-clear water, and perfect waves, it’s no wonder everyone loves it here. You’ll see surfers of all levels, from first-timers to seasoned pros, and everyone is just having a blast. Plus, with well-staffed lifeguards and plenty of amenities, you can sit back and relax without a care in the world. Just don’t forget your sunscreen – you don’t want to end up looking like a lobster!

For Spectators

There are two primary surfing areas on the beach. You’ll find the surfers by the best breaks on the south end of the shore (rolling in towards the pier). The area is has a very beachy vibe with a few fun restaurants, parks, and beach supply rental shops.

Windansea, La Jolla

Why this surf spot?

The waves here are no joke – they’re powerful, fast, and really pack a punch. But that doesn’t stop the local surfers from carving up the ocean with style and grace. Windansea has some of the most consistent surfable waves in San Diego which typically draws a decent number of surfers at peak wave times. This spot is definitely for more advanced surfers, not beginners. While you’re there, be careful not to ruffle any feathers with the regulars – they can be a bit territorial.

For spectators

If you’re looking for a front-row seat to watch some surfers catch some gnarly waves – head down the stairs to the beach off of Neptune Place street. With its high cliffs and natural arena, Windensea gives you the perfect angle to watch good surfers in action. If you want some shade take a little break in the permanent tiki hut on the beach.

Make sure to park your ride before heading down to the beach, as parking can be a bit of a challenge. But once you’re there, you’ll be treated to one of the best free shows in town.

Lower Trestles

Why this surf spot?

This place is the cream of the crop when it comes to surfing spots in San Diego, and it’s not just the locals who know it. World champion Kelly Slater himself calls this place his fave in the world! So, you know you’re in for a treat. The waves here are so long and perfect that you’ll see some of the most epic surfing ever. And if you’re lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of some pro surfers in action.

For spectators

The beach is a long walk in from the parking lot. It also requires some light hiking to get down to the beach.

Sunset Cliffs

For spectators

The area south of San Diego known as Point Loma is composed of rugged sea cliffs and is known collectively as the Sunset Cliffs. If you’re looking for a real surfers’ paradise, this is where it’s at! This spot is strictly for the locals, so you know the surfers here are the real deal. And the breaks here are so diverse that they can be surfed on a longboard or shortboard.

For spectators

Sunset Cliffs can be a little tricky to reach. Once you reach the parking lot, you’ll need to take the narrow staircase down from Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Make sure to wear some good movement shoes because, you might need to scramble up and down the bluffs & cliffs to get a good view.

The Ultimate Guide for Nerdy Travel Accessories

I love nerdy things. Any time I find myself in situation where I know there’ll be a Funko Pop or two and some good company, I’m ecstatic. When I discovered nerdy travel accessories, it was like rolling my first polyhedral dice across the villain’s dungeon map.

What nerd doesn’t like fun travel accessories? Everyone does!

On a shorter trip use something small like a Dr. Who Laptop Backpack, Super Mario World Carry-On Bag, or Marvel Hero duffel. On longer trips you’ll need something big and sturdy like the Star Wars Hard Side Spinner Wheel Suitcase or a Poké Ball Full Size Suitcase Cover. For specialized gaming trips, bring a table top miniatures travel bag to protect your figures in route.

Finally, safeguard your luggage from Nilfgaard soldiers and careless luggage attendants by labeling it with a sturdy luggage tag.

Keep all your accessories charged up with a power bank, travel adapter or global charging kit. I recommend an iPad and some statement headphones (Hello Kitty, Elf Ears or AirPods with a Nerd-y case).

As you get ready to embark, there are a few last-minute small gadgets that deserve a spot in your travel bag. A Bluetooth adapter will allow you to use your regular cordless earbuds to tap into a headphone jack audio system (in a car or on an airplane). When you’re traveling, your hometown shows your roots and . Share a little bit of it with the people you’ll be visiting! Bring a quality, item from your hometown or several small items as part of a “my favorite things” gift basket.

Local Coffee or Tea

Local coffee or tea is easy to transport, and it’s something that can easily be personalized for your hostess. Besides being easy to find and buy (especially online), local coffee is also typically roasted within 100 miles of where you live so you won’t run into any issues getting it shipped on time.

Nice Bottle of Wine

Whether you’re visiting someone’s home or hosting a dinner party, it’s always nice to have a bottle of wine on hand. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but if you can afford it and know what you like, there’s no shame in bringing a nicer bottle.

Local Craft Beer

As a last-minute gift idea, consider giving a local craft beer. There are so many wonderful breweries in every state (and even some abroad). You can usually find these beers at your grocery store or liquor store, which also makes them easy to pack for travel!

Biscotti, Pretzels, and Other Baked Goods

Biscotti and pretzels are two classic snacks that are easy to travel with, especially if you buy them from a local bakery or market. They’re also easy to put into a plastic bag or container without looking too fancy. Plus, both of these treats go well with wine or any other beverage that your friends might offer.

Flavorful Candles & Soaps

Candles and soaps have an extra touch of home! You can typically find then at local shops made from regional ingredients.

Raw Local Honey

Locally produced honey is full of antioxidants, pollen, protein, minerals, and vitamins. You can buy raw honey at most grocery stores or farmers markets (and even some big box stores). If you’re buying local honey, look for those that are marked “local” or “organic.”

Neighborhood Chef’s Cookbook

You might not be able to take them to your favorite restaurant, but you can bring your favorite to them in fresh, gourmet style! If your friend is more of a foodie, consider getting them a cookbook by a chef from your favorite restaurant in your home neighborhood.

Local Music (CD or digital download)

If you know the taste of your friend, then you can easily find an artist or band that they will like at a local music store. Next time they come visit you, invite them to see the local musician live in concert!

What are the Best ‘Luxury Practical’ Gifts?

The best gifts are the ones that are thoughtful, but also practical or consumable. I like to gift items that can be consumed, but are of a higher or nicer quality than the host typically buys for themselves. I refer to these items as ‘luxury practical’.

Note: This may not be the ideal gift type if your host regularly purchases high quality consumable items for their household.

Candles

Candles make a great luxury practical gift. They’re easy to find, transport, gift, and store. Consider the candle tier levels below:

Flowers

Flowers are the perfect gift for a hostess or host. They’re easy to find, and you can have them delivered directly to their home or office. Most people don’t buy flowers regularly for themselves so having a fresh bouquet is definitely a natural luxury that your host will enjoy!

Chocolates

If you’re pressed for time and looking for a last-minute gift idea, consider high quality chocolates. Ideally, you can purchase fresh chocolates from a local shop, however, these chocolate brands will also emit the same luxury vibe:

What are the Best Experience Gifts?

What if your host is the “person who has everything”? Consider getting an experience gift instead of something material. Experience gifts provide lasting memories and are often more meaningful than material items. Check out our suggestions below:

Treat Them to a New Restaurant

If your friend loves to try new food, but hasn’t had a chance to visit the new local Thai place, consider taking them out! If you’re short on time you can also, purchase a gift card for them to use at a more convenient time.

Functionality: Should you buy a dryer with a US plug or European plug?

First things first, your dryer should be able to plug into the wall. If you didn’t already know, Europe uses a different power system than the US and other countries (read the nitty gritty details here). There are two primary differences:

  1. Shape of the plug
  2. Voltage

Shape of Plug

If you are including Britain in your European trip, you will need to consider that the plug shape is different from the rest of Europe. An easy way to get around multiple plug shapes is to purchase a travel power adaptor that can be used in any country. We recommend this one for $29.95.

Voltage

European appliances run on 220V while the US and some other countries appliances run on 110V. Make sure the dryer you purchase can withstand a range of power voltage from 110V – 220V. Your power converter should work fine with all hair dryers in that range of voltage.

Portability: Which dryer will be easiest to travel with?

Dryer Form or Shape

Standard hair dryers come in a cumbersome “L” shape with little to no adjustability. Quality travel hair dryers are much smaller in size and have the ability to fold or compact.

Weight

You don’t want to be carrying a heavy dryer all over Europe. Try to find one that is under 1 pound (16 ounces).

Attachments

Standard hair dryer attachments are a concentrator which pushes the flow of air into a focused direction, and a diffuser which separates hair while drying for more body & curl definition.

Value: Which travel dryer is the best value?

Conair Compact Hair Dryer
